They don't always sink, of course; a large number of drive-ins continue to operate throughout the Buckeye State, including classics such as the Lynn Auto Theater in Strasburg (America's second-oldest continuously operating drive-in at sixty-seven years), Springfield's Melody Cruise-In (featuring a gorgeous multicolored neon entrance and marquee), the Elm Road Twin in Warren (concession stand with over sixty items!), and Columbus's South Twin (operating well inside the city limits and consistently packing the house on summer weekends).
I love going to the drive-in movies. As sad as it is that they close down with such frequency, I'm always happy to find a forgotten ozoner rotting away in a vacant lot somewhere, weeds growing up where cars used to park, the screen either full of drooping holes or gone altogether. Here I've assembled my explorations of the less fortunate of Ohio's drive-in movie theaters, as well as a reasonably complete list of darkened screens all across the state. Please e-mail me if you know of any I've forgotten, or if you have memories to share about one of the theaters on my list.
